The Exam Prep course prepares potential Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster candidates for their RYA practical exam. The course takes places over 7 days in Saldanha Bay. 5 days are devoted to identifying a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses and refining their practical sailing abilities to the point where they can demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence to the Examiner. The final 2 days (if 2 days are needed) are spent with the examiner under exam conditions. Students are expected to do a passage plan (we will provide the charts and almanac though its highly recommended that a candidate undertakes the Coastal/ Yachtmasters theory course), complete a man overboard under the engine and sail, sail on and off a dock and show a command of the collision regulations as set out in the IRPC’s (rules of the road). Candidates will also be given a blind navigation exercise and need to demonstrate competence in navigational techniques including the use of GPS. Docking, engine checks and a comprehensive safety briefing are also examined in addition to any other abilities that the examiner may determine necessary.
Before a candidate can be examined they must provide proof of the following:

2 days as skipper
800 miles (400 miles and 20 days if took Coastal practical course)
12 night hours
VHF certificate
1st Aid Certificate
Yachtmaster
50 days sea time
5 days as skipper
2500 miles
5 passages over 60M, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper
VHF Certificate
1s Aid Certificate
