STCW 2010 Refresher Course
As of 1st January 2017, all seafarers working commercially (Superyachts, Cruise Ships, Offshore) and in possession of STCW basic or advanced certificates, either need to have documentary evidence that the training was completed or refreshed within the last 5 years.
Holders of STCW certificates acquired in South Africa
Holders of STCW basic or advanced certificates acquired in South Africa need only ensure their certificates, which expire after 5 years, are in-date and attend STCW refresher courses to continue working legally and securely in their respective maritime field.
Holders of STCW certificates acquired outside of South Africa
Holders of STCW basic or advanced certificates acquired outside of South Africa, which previously had no expiration date, are at risk of working illegally or not being able to secure work if the STCW basic courses or STCW refresher courses have not been completed within the last 5 years.
STCW Refresher requirements
*Current STCW certificates must be valid and in-date
*Proof of seatime in the form of logbook/seamans book (at least 1 year in the last 5 years)
Please note: holders of the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB) certification are also subject to the STCW 2010 manila amendments and are required to either complete the full course or 1-day refresher, if certificates are in-date. More info on PSCRB Refresher here
Elementary First Aid Refresher: 1 Day
Basic Marine Fire Fighting Refresher: 1 Day
PSSR Refresher: 1 Day
PST Refresher: 1 Day
